Thank you Linguist. It is a little small, measuring 3.75 inches by 2.25 inches by .75inches thick that's 95mm x 58mm x 22mm in metric. But it is perfectly useable and good things often come in small packages. It is a very dense material. It is dark grey in colour with a blue green tint in the grey. It feels and looks like a high quality Thuringian slate. On very heavy sanding/lapping, it produces a dirty black green slurry, but in normal use, the slurry is light white/green and it is not a dirty hone. Here are some photo's of the hone, first dry, then wet, then wet with a light slurry........ This hone is similar to a Thuringian slate or Escher branded hone. I actually prefer it. It is a very good finishing hone and it puts a smoother edge than I was expecting. Normally, I expect a raspy but sharp edge of the Thuringian slate hones but this Turkish hone is softer somehow and produces a really smooth comfortable edge. I tested it by first touching up an edge on a Japanese synthetic 8k hone and then polishing the edge with this new hone and stropping on leather. As comfortable and sharp an edge as you could wish for. Every bit as good as a coticule edge in my opinion. Here are some pictures of the hone with a razor and the edge it produces. Bottom line, a really good finishing hone that will satisfy the most demanding of tastes. Just for the record, the stone that I received needed heavy sanding and lapping to bring the working surface to a usable level. Not a criticism but a progression starting at 40 grit then 80, 120, 180, 400. 600, 800 and finally, 1200 was used. Yerli Thuringen Tasimiz - linguist - 08/06/2012 ayrica gonderdigi mailde sunlari yazmis. Hi Ozkan, I have received the hone, lapped it. I think it is great and thank you for finding it and sending it to me. I have quite a few finishing hones and this one is as good as any. You really don't need a coticule, this hone is that good. I prefer to set a bevel on a 1000 grit synthetic Japanese hone. It so easy and coticules are really hard work. OK some guys have the time and get a satisfaction out of it but often they are blinkered to the ability of other types of hone. If you have a Japanese 8k or higher hone, this hone will polish the edge to perfection. Naniwa sell a 3000/8000 combination superstone that would be perfect used with this hone as the finisher. The 3000 would set the bevel, the 8000 would sharpen and start the polishing and the Turkish slate would finish it. I know you said you build a big slurry and set the bevel with it, but in all honesty, I think the hone has too fine a grit for that task although I don't doubt it will do it. Anyway, thanks again |
